John Petrucci, renowned guitarist and co-founder of the progressive metal band Dream Theater, celebrates his 59th birthday on July 12, 2026. Born in Kings Park, New York, in 1967, Petrucci has been a prominent figure in rock music for over 40 years.
Starting guitar at age 12, Petrucci drew early inspiration from icons such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Iron Maiden. While studying at Berklee College of Music, he formed Dream Theater in 1985 with bassist John Myung and drummer Mike Portnoy. The band’s blend of technical proficiency and progressive metal quickly garnered attention.
Reflecting on his career, Petrucci shared in a 2024 interview, “I always had a clear vision from a young age. I idolized bands like Rush and Iron Maiden and sought to follow their path. Though I didn’t fully grasp the effort involved, my drive and discipline kept me focused.”
Dream Theater’s breakthrough came with their 1992 single “Pull Me Under,” a defining track that remains a staple in the metal genre. The song reached No. 10 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and was later recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 greatest heavy metal songs of all time.” Notably, the track experienced renewed popularity years later in the UK, charting on the Official Physical Singles list.
Continuing their legacy, Dream Theater earned a Grammy Award in 2022 for Best Metal Performance with “The Alien,” the opening track from their acclaimed 2021 album A View from the Top of the World. Petrucci’s enduring influence and musicianship remain central to the band’s ongoing success.
