Jottings from 5th & G: Trains, trolleys, ferries and fun

Northwest travels are the stuff of legends, from Lewis & Clark to the Oregon Trail. From Sasquatch to the Spruce Goose. Or DB Cooper to the Aerial Tram. What’s here locally for us to explore this summer?

Ride the rails

Oregon’s first electric railway ran 14 miles from Oregon City into Portland on the east side of the Willamette River from 1893 until 1958. Farmers brought their crops north to downtown markets, and Portlanders rode south for country air and rejuvenation. St.Therese Sanitorium in Oak Grove restored the lungs, and Elmer Gantry-style Revivals in Jennings Lodge redeemed souls long before the railway tracks were paved over in the mid-century. Today the restored Trolley Trail is beloved by both local and visiting walkers, runners and bicyclists.

On the Willamette’s west shores, the historic Willamette Shore Trolley now runs on weekends, through Lake Oswego. Call 503-697-7436.

Up the Columbia Gorge, the Waterfall Trolley boards in Corbett and includes stops at Multnomah Falls, Bridal Veil, etc. Visit waterfalltrolley.com…
