Texas Panhandle First Responders Memorial officially under construction

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Texas Panhandle First Responders Memorial is officially under construction according to officials. The memorial is set to honor first responders who died in the line of duty from the top 26 counties in the Texas Panhandle.

According to Friends of A.J. Swope, Board of Directors Member Wes Reeves shared they have dirt work going on right now.

“Of course, the memorial itself will be two large walls above ground and of course they’ll be lit and look really nice so that’s what a lot of this work is right now below grade getting the power in and all that type of thing,” explained Reeves. “They’ll be working on it throughout the summer and into the fall.”

According to Reeves, the non-profit first began thinking about the project eight years ago, with it picking up steam last year. After receiving the first give from Valero Corporation. Reeves shared, many businesses and individuals came together to raise more than $1 million for the project. According to Reeves they’ll have funding left over to maintain the project…
