WASHINGTON — Alameda Belt Line, the joint BNSF Railway-Union Pacific operation created to share operations on the Alameda Corridor, has filed a notice with the federal regulators that it intends to take over rail operations at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach no later than Jan. 1, 2027.
Rail lines in the port have been operated since 1998 by Pacific Harbor Line, an Anacostia Rail Holdings operation, but the operating contract was put out to bid last year. The notice filed on Monday, July 13, informs employees of the planned takeover and says ABL plans to file a notice of exemption with the Surface Transportation Board to authorize the change on or after July 27.
ABL says it anticipates offering employment to all active PHL employees who are members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen. It will honor the remainder of the current agreement between Pacific Harbor Line and the BLET, provided that the employees select the BLET as their representative under the new operator.
