The landscape of Tennessee high school athletics is changing following the implementation of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s new one-time transfer rule, giving student-athletes greater flexibility to change schools while remaining immediately eligible to compete.
The rule, which took effect July 1 after being signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee and adopted by the TSSAA Legislative Council, allows middle and high school athletes one transfer without a bona fide change of address during each stage of their education.
Under the new policy, students are allowed one “free” transfer during grades 6-8 and another during grades 9-12, provided the move occurs during summer break.
