As Halle Berry approaches her 60th birthday this August, the acclaimed actress remains as driven as ever, with no intention of retiring anytime soon. Speaking on the “Making Space with Hoda Kotb” podcast, Berry addressed the common question she faces about whether she plans to step back from acting.
“I often get asked, ‘Haven’t you done so much? Isn’t it time to just quit and enjoy a permanent vacation?’”
Berry shared. But for her, retirement isn’t a natural next step.
“After dedicating my life to this work, which has given me purpose and validation, why would I just stop? What comes after that?”
she questioned.
Berry also highlighted a broader societal issue: the expectation that aging means becoming invisible or less valuable. “There’s this assumption that older people should retire and disappear, as if life is over or our voices no longer matter,” she said. She firmly rejects that notion, emphasizing that age does not diminish one’s worth or contributions.
This isn’t Berry’s first time challenging age-related stereotypes. Earlier this year, she spoke candidly about feeling marginalized as she got older but vowed not to let that erase her presence or passion.
She’s in good company. Legendary actors like Morgan Freeman, nearing 90, continue to work because they believe in staying active and engaged. Similarly, musician Patti Smith, at 79, says aging has only fueled her creative ambitions.
For Halle Berry, and many others, age is simply another chapter-not a reason to slow down.
