Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon, mother of Kris Jenner and beloved matriarch of the Jenner-Kardashian family, has passed away at the age of 91, her family confirmed Thursday.
Kris Jenner shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional Instagram tribute, describing MJ as “the heart of our family.” In her message, Jenner reflected on the invaluable lessons her mother imparted-love, kindness, resilience, and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
“To love your family fiercely, to be kind, to show up for the people you love, and to never take a single moment together for granted,” Jenner wrote. “She taught us that family is everything… She showed me how to face life’s challenges with resilience and faith.”
Jenner’s tribute continued with a poignant letter to her mother: “Thank you for every sacrifice you made, every piece of wisdom you shared, and every moment you loved us so completely. Our hearts are broken, but we find comfort knowing that love like yours never truly leaves us… When I look at my kids and my grandkids, I will forever see pieces of you in all of us.”
Born Mary Jo Campbell on July 26, 1934, MJ’s early life saw her marry her high school sweetheart briefly before marrying Robert “Bob” True Houghton in 1954. She and Bob welcomed Kris Jenner in 1955 and Karen Houghton in 1958 before divorcing seven years later.
MJ later married businessman Harry Shannon, who helped raise Kris and Karen in San Diego, where she also managed a children’s clothing store. Harry Shannon passed away in 2003.
MJ was a familiar presence on the family’s popular reality shows, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and Hulu’s “The Kardashians.” Fans saw glimpses of her strength through health battles, including her battles with colon and breast cancer. In one memorable episode, MJ candidly discussed her fears and shared a lighthearted moment with Kris over marijuana gummies and snacks.
Following the announcement of MJ’s passing, Kim Kardashian addressed criticism over a tequila-themed social media post that coincided with the news. She explained the post had been scheduled prior to the loss and emphasized her focus on family during this difficult time.
In a heartfelt tribute, Kim honored her grandmother as her “best friend” and “gossip buddy,” praising her influence as a hardworking businesswoman who gave her first job and instilled lasting lessons about strength and confidence.
This loss comes shortly after the family mourned the death of Jenner’s longtime bodyguard, Mason Haynes, who tragically died in a traffic accident at age 52.
The Jenner-Kardashian family and fans alike now remember Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon for her enduring love, resilience, and the deep imprint she left on those closest to her.
