MOBILE, Ala. (NBC 15) — The Navy has awarded a new $418.5 million contract to dismantle, recycle and dispose of the former USS Enterprise in Mobile, marking a major step forward after a legal fight stalled the high-profile project.
NorthStar Maritime Dismantlement Services LLC, based in Vernon, Vermont, was awarded the $418,497,668 firm-fixed-price contract for the complete dismantling of ex-Enterprise, also known as CVN 65.
The award is far below earlier estimates for the project. The Government Accountability Office previously said dismantling and disposing of the ex-USS Enterprise could cost the Navy more than $1 billion.
