Gail’s Down the Street Cafe, a meat-and-three lunch spot on Zelda Road, has been a Montgomery institution since 1993. But the beloved restaurant and its owner are facing one of their toughest battles yet.
In 2025, Royal was diagnosed with breast cancer. She pushed through her diagnosis and chemotherapy treatments while continuing to show up to work. Since April, however, she has been in and out of the hospital battling the cancer and related infections, leaving her unable to return to the restaurant she built…
