Drought levels gradually increase as we hit the midyear mark

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – It’s Thursday which means the latest drought monitor was released and not surprisingly, it doesn’t show anything promising.

The abnormal drought level continues to expand gradually and now includes Pottawattamie and Cass County in both Nebraska and Iowa.

Since the last few rain chances focused primarily over counties south of I-80, they’ll be safe from drought potential for a little while.

When looking at the rainfall totals compared to the average over the past thirty and ninety days, it explains why communities north of I-80 are falling into drought levels while areas south aren’t.

When there’s a prolonged period of well below average precipitation, this will cause drought levels to increase quickly…
