Uber and Lyft pickup restrictions coming to Gaslamp Quarter: Here are the details

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — In an effort to curb congestion on one of the most bustling streets in the Gaslamp District, the city of San Diego is implementing a restriction on rideshare pickups along Fifth Avenue.

The city collaborated with rideshare companies Lyft and Uber to designate pickup locations outside of a geofenced area. The geofence will prohibit Lyft and Uber vehicles from picking up customers along Fifth Avenue between Market and E Streets in downtown San Diego.

The geofence restriction will be implemented every Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. beginning July 17.

There will be 14 different pickup locations outside the geofence to which rideshare users will be directed. Pickups will not be allowed in the restricted area at the specified times; however, rideshare drop-offs will be allowed inside the geofenced zone during those hours.

Here are the 14 designated pickup locations:

The city says the restrictions aim to reduce congestion during restaurant and bar closing times and improve access for pedestrians and vehicles.
