VIDEO: FBI, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office investigate threat against Wilmington mosque

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The FBI and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a threat against a Wilmington mosque after security camera footage captured a man talking about tearing down the Islamic Center of Wilmington.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the man in the video is a suspect in the multi-agency investigation. The sheriff’s office said it’s increased patrols in the Myrtle Grove neighborhood this week, and the mosque has added additional security.

Safwan Salman, the imam and director of the Islamic Center of Wilmington, said the FBI called him Sunday night to warn him about a possible threat against the mosque. He later reviewed security camera footage from around 11 a.m. Sunday morning that showed a man banging on the door, cursing and discussing tearing the building down…
