BALTIMORE, Md. — Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown joined a coalition of 42 attorneys general this week to announce an 18 million dollar settlement resolving allegations against 23andMe over a 2023 data breach that compromised the genetic data of 6.9 million customers worldwide.
The direct-to-consumer genetic testing company filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2025, and the settlement was reached with the Office of the United States Bankruptcy Trustee. Because of the limited funds in the bankruptcy estate and numerous competing claims, the recovery is capped at 18 million dollars, which will be paid out of available bankruptcy funds immediately.
In October 2023, 23andMe disclosed that a data breach had exposed a wide range of sensitive customer information, including genetic ancestry data, affecting more than 94,000 Maryland residents. Portions of the stolen data were subsequently put up for sale on the dark web…
