Kratos Defense is bringing a new wave of aerospace manufacturing to Sacramento, locking in a deal to build Elroy Air’s Chaparral autonomous cargo aircraft at its local production site and eyeing first production aircraft in late 2026. The Chaparral, a hybrid-electric vertical‑takeoff‑and‑landing aircraft, is designed to haul more than 500 pounds for roughly 450 miles and is being pitched for middle‑mile commercial logistics as well as military resupply missions.
In a July 20 press release, Kratos said it will produce the Chaparral at its “expanding Sacramento, California production facility” and expects to hire more than 50 additional workers on top of its roughly 450‑person local staff as production ramps, according to Kratos Defense. The announcement was also covered by the Sacramento Business Journal, which underscored the potential boost for the local economy.
Elroy Air, which is moving toward going public via a SPAC, has told investors it sees a demand pipeline of more than 1,400 aircraft and over $5 billion in potential revenue and identifies Kratos as its exclusive U.S. manufacturer, with first production Chaparral aircraft planned for late 2026, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing also stresses that this pipeline is built on non‑binding letters of intent and cautions that converting interest into firm orders, along with securing regulatory approvals, are still major hurdles.
Local Jobs And Factory Expansion
Kratos said its Sacramento production line is within driving distance of Elroy Air’s headquarters and that the expansion will open jobs for aircraft technicians, composite manufacturing specialists, assemblers, engineers and quality‑assurance staff, according to the company release. “At Kratos, we have built our business around rapidly transitioning advanced unmanned aircraft from development into affordable, scalable production,” Steve Fendley, president of Kratos’ Unmanned Systems division, said in the statement. The company expects its Sacramento workforce to climb past 500 employees as Chaparral production increases.
