‘One of the good ones’: St. George Fire Department remembers one of their own, gone too soon

St. George Fire Department firefighter Philip Stephen Castleberry, 45, died July 17, 2026, surrounded by his family after a courageous yearlong battle with lymphoma. He had been a firefighter operator with the department since September 2012.

“Everything he did was for a greater cause,” said St. George Fire Department’s public education officer Meg Kling. “Some of us may never even know what actually drove him to be so good. When he was doing something, it was going to be done right and with care. He wasn’t going to let you down.”

On the St. George Fire Department Facebook page, Kling described Castleberry as “the firefighter everyone hoped to have on their crew” and “the firefighter you sent the rookies to … because you knew he’d patiently teach them the right way, never asking for recognition in return.”…
