JACKSONVILLE, FL — Dry conditions are intensifying across the Jacksonville region, where parts of North Florida and Southeast Georgia are now dealing with a rainfall deficit of 20 to 25 inches. The prolonged drought is adding to fire concerns as crews and residents keep an eye on growing smoke and wildfire activity.
Recent fires have burned as many as 5,000 acres in areas including Putnam and Clay counties. Forecasters say the threat remains elevated as the region heads through another stretch of hot, sunny weather.
Smoke Alert
A dense smoke advisory is in effect for Clinch and Echols counties in southeast Georgia, just north of the Florida line. The smoke is most concentrated near the ground during the morning, when cooler air and calm winds can trap it close to the surface.
In those areas, visibility can fall to half a mile or less. Air quality is currently rated moderate, but officials are watching conditions closely because they can change quickly.
