Local psychologist, Dr. Julie Morison, Director of HPA/LiveWell in Albany says it is up to us to try to take something away from these terrible situations, calling it a gift of sorts to others that could potentially prevent similar tragedies.
Dr. Morison, uses the example of Harbi Nagi, the young nonverbal boy with autism from Guilderland, who recently wandered away from his family and was found dead in a pool two days later. Dr. Morison says as tragic as it was, we can take a look at our own circumstances and formulate better safety habits or plans to try to keep our loved ones safe. She says being proactive will help manage our anxiety and keep us from becoming paralyzed with worry.
