12 On Your Side Investigates: New video, new questions for indicted deputy

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Richmond County Deputy Clarence “Nic” Johnson V is out on bond after a grand jury indicted him in a January use-of-force case. Prosecutors allege Johnson unlawfully used a Taser on Frank McCurry and pushed him to the ground, knocking out some of his teeth.

Now, 12 On Your Side has obtained Internal Affairs records, state certification documents, and now body cam video that shows another encounter less than an hour earlier — one in which Johnson’s own agency found he used unnecessary force.

Video shows another arrest outside Garden City

The earlier incident happened about 1:50 a.m. Jan. 11 outside Garden City Social Club on Broad Street, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office report.

Sgt. Eric McCants wrote that deputies were responding to a verbal confrontation involving 19-year-old Cael Harris. McCants wrote that Harris refused orders to leave, stiffened his body as deputies tried to guide him away, and said he did not care…
