Lyon College of Batesville is doing interesting things, such as its expansion into a School of Dental Medicine in Little Rock, and the Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine in Cabot. We’re certain that the Presbyterian Church members who created Lyon College – then Arkansas College – back in 1872 never dreamed about the dramatic turn it has taken in recent years. The same might also be said about our own Southern Arkansas University. There may have been some Magnolians who could see that the Third District Agricultural School might become a junior college. But it did, and on this date in 1949, Southern State College officials met with Gov. Sid McMath to discuss making SSC a four-year institution. SSC became Southern Arkansas University. Here in 2026, SAU now awards doctorates in a small number of fields. Like Lyon, SAU is not static. It will continue to grow and change in ways we can’t imagine.
We have eaten the last of our Mulerider Farmstead sausage. We bought six pounds of sausage, with each package being made into quarter-pound sausage patties in turn. The Mulerider Farmstead pork chops we purchased were done weeks ago. Here at Reporter Mansion, we’re looking forward to the Farmstead project’s next batch of hog-based products and hope it will extend its offering to beef products as well.
