Gas leak from 1,600-gallon propane tank shut down major Pierce County road

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to a 1,600-gallon propane tank with an active leak Tuesday night, closing down a South Hill road.

According to a CPFR Facebook post, crews arrived at 6:39 p.m. to inspect the commercial propane tank near 152nd Street East and Meridian Avenue East. CPFR spokesperson Brianna Stenstrom told The News Tribune on Wednesday that the tank was at a propane supplier . The Washington State Patrol shut down Meridian Avenue East in both directions around the 15200 block to investigate the leak.

Firefighters performed controlled fire operations to burn off the fuel to “relieve the pressure inside the tank,” Stenstrom explained. At around 1 a.m. this morning, the firefighters completed the fuel burning and opened Meridian Avenue East to the public…
