Huntsville nutritionist answers questions regarding cyclospora outbreak

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – As concerns over cyclospora continue in North Alabama, a Huntsville nutritionist says people do not have to give up eating vegetables. They may just need to rethink how they prepare them.

Treva Garcia, a registered nutritionist and dietitian and owner of Real Healthy Habits in Huntsville, said more people have been coming into her practice with questions about cyclospora, particularly whether it is still safe to eat lettuce and salads.

The concern followed an FDA notification to Taylor Farms that one of its iceberg lettuce products from central Mexico had tested positive for the cyclospora parasite. Days later, the agency said that result was a false positive. Even so, Garcia said some people are still avoiding lettuce out of caution…
