The Erie County Department of Health is encouraging residents to be informed consumers when purchasing or using hemp-derived products, including beverages, foods, and edibles containing delta-9 THC and other psychoactive cannabinoids.
As hemp-derived products continue to grow in popularity and availability, health officials say many consumers may not fully understand what these products contain or the effects they may have. Hemp-derived THC products are commonly sold as beverages, gummies, candies, baked goods, and other edible items in retail locations throughout the region.
The Erie County Department of Health warns that hemp-derived THC products may:
- Cause impairment and affect judgment, coordination, and reaction time
- Trigger anxiety, dizziness, confusion, or hallucinations in some individuals
- Increase the risk of accidental overconsumption, particularly with edibles that can take one to four hours before effects are felt
- Interact with prescription medications
- Lead to a positive drug screening test
- Pose serious risks to children and pets if accidentally consumed
Unlike products sold through Pennsylvania’s regulated medical marijuana program, many hemp-derived THC products are available in convenience stores, specialty shops, and other retail settings where consumers may view them as similar to traditional food and beverage products…
