BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The City of Buffalo celebrated the completion of an innovative, multi-million-dollar fish passage project in the Niagara River on Thursday.
The $13.4 million project, funded entirely by the EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, features a 778-foot-long structure that utilizes specially designed steel baffles to slow the river’s currents, allowing a critical prey fish, the emerald shiner, to safely swim upstream after spawning.
