This weekday lunch spot in Shreveport serves American classics, Creole cuisine but no sweet tea

Located in an unassuming building in Highland near downtown Shreveport, this lunch-only restaurant serves soups, salads, sandwiches, and specialty menu items to a weekday crowd.

For some reason, whenever I visit Jacquelyn’s Cafe, I always feel like I’ve been transported to another place, or time, or maybe both. Is it the way the building with the green awnings bumps up almost to the street? Or the very tall ceilings inside? The beauty of the wood trim or the simplicity of the counter, chalkboard menu, tables and chairs? Maybe it’s the sweet staff in white aprons taking care of customers?

I don’t know the age of the building, but Jacquelyn’s has been serving American lunch classics and Louisiana Creole cuisine for 40-plus years, with one change in ownership in 2019.

At Jacquelyn’s, you order at the counter and choose your own table. Although the cafe is casual, it’s a treat to have white tablecloths and not bus your own table. I was surprised to find that sweet tea is not on the menu – but they do have sugar and sweeteners for the iced tea…
