Officials rule man’s June death in Kern River as accidental drowning

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kern County officials have determined the cause of death for the man who went unresponsive in the Kern River in late June.

The coroner’s office determined that 22-year-old William Omar Leiva Orellana’s death was ruled as an accidental drowning after performing a postmortem examination.

Orellana — who is from Bakersfield — entered the Kern River on June 22 around 5:41 p.m. and went unresponsive while in the water.
