Evacuations Ordered Near Bordeaux as Wildfire Advances
ARCACHON, France – Authorities have mandated evacuations in several suburbs west of Bordeaux as a large wildfire moves closer to the renowned wine region. Early Saturday, the prefect of the Gironde department, which encompasses Bordeaux, issued the evacuation order affecting parts of three suburbs, including the area surrounding the city’s airport.
In a statement, officials emphasized the necessity of the evacuation despite extensive firefighting efforts, citing the fire’s continued spread and the priority of ensuring residents’ safety.
The wildfire is part of a broader crisis affecting southwestern France and central Spain, where roughly 200,000 people have been displaced due to rapidly advancing forest fires. Flames have forced evacuations in towns near both Madrid and Bordeaux, with firefighters in both countries struggling to contain the blazes intensified by extreme heat and the ongoing impacts of climate change.
Spanish firefighters acknowledged the speed and intensity of the fires made direct engagement difficult, while in France, some residents escaped the advancing flames by fleeing via boat along the Atlantic coast.
According to France’s interior ministry, approximately 141,000 people have evacuated homes in the Gironde and Landes departments. Meanwhile, Spain’s interior ministry reports that around 60,000 residents in central Spain have been forced to leave their homes amid the wildfire emergency.
