ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Fallon Stubbs just turned 44, the same age her mother was when she died in the bombing at Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Stubbs was 14 when she and her mother, Alice Hawthorne, drove from Albany to Atlanta to join the Olympic festivities. Stubbs said her mother nudged her to go because the two were close friends and wanted to experience the Games together.
That night — July 27, 1996 — a backpack bomb exploded in the crowded park. Hawthorne was killed and Stubbs was injured. Stubbs said she suffered cuts to her arms and legs and that one finger remains fused from the injuries…
