ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a cold front will bring an unusually organized severe weather threat to the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia on Tuesday afternoon through late evening.
Most of the region is under a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms, with the primary danger being damaging winds across a wider area than typical July thunderstorms.
In the Greenville-Spartanburg forecast area, probability maps show severe wind is most likely across the North Carolina mountains, foothills, and Piedmont.
Large hail between one and two inches in diameter is more likely across the northern half of the region than farther south.
Forecasters note that the main uncertainty involves leftover clouds or cool air from early morning decaying storms; if that morning cloud cover lingers, it could limit afternoon instability and lower the overall severe threat.
