ROYAL OAK — On July 12, the Detroit Zoo welcomed the birth of a baby gorilla, a girl, making her the sixth member of the gorilla enclosure and the second born in the zoo’s history.
The baby, who does not yet have a name, was born to first-time mom Tulivu in the late evening of Sunday, July 12. The baby’s father is Mshindi; all three of them are said to be doing well and thriving in the habitat.
“It’s really important because not only is this a first-time mother who had this infant, and she is doing a really great job, which is amazing, but it’s also important because gorillas are critically endangered in the wild, so this allows people to make that connection when they come to the zoo and see the gorillas,” said Jill Moyse, senior director of animal care at the Detroit Zoo. “Maybe they will want to help save the gorillas after they see the baby.”…
