Here’s a mix-up that’s becoming more common than a lot of parents probably realize. On July 14, a Placer County Sheriff’s deputy patrolling West Roseville spotted two teenagers cruising through the Heritage Placer Vineyards neighborhood at speeds that had nothing to do with a leisurely bike ride. The vehicles in question were eMotorcycles, not e-bikes, and that distinction matters a lot more than it sounds.
When the teens noticed the deputy, they made a run for it. It wasn’t much of a chase, though. They pulled over near Baseline Road and Stargazer Road without any further drama, which is probably the best outcome anyone could have hoped for once they realized the jig was up. Both eMotorcycles were towed, and the parents got the call every parent dreads: come pick up your kid’s ride from impound.
The Sheriff’s Office used the incident as a teaching moment, and a fair one at that. Their message wasn’t “ban e-bikes” or “kids shouldn’t be outside.” It was something closer to “know what you’re buying before you buy it.” Apparently this is a recurring theme for them, with plenty of parents saying they had no idea the eMotorcycle their kid was riding wasn’t street legal in the first place…
