Man alert after drowning near Washington Island; bystanders performed lifesaving measures

WASHINGTON ISLAND, Wis. (WBAY) – A 36-year-old man was transported to a hospital in Green Bay after drowning at Schoolhouse Beach on Washington Island on Saturday, the Washington Island Police Department said.

At approximately 3:44 p.m. on July 25, the Washington Island Police Department was notified of a possible drowning at Schoolhouse Beach, 1860 Schoolhouse Beach Road in the Town of Washington.

What happened

Initial investigation indicates the man was swimming approximately 30 to 40 yards offshore when he went underwater.

Bystanders reported he was underwater for approximately two to three minutes…
