Older Chicagoans Can Get Free Rides To Grocery Stores Following Save A Lot Closures, Mayor Says

CHICAGO — Following the closure of seven Save A Lot grocery stores on the South and West sides, rideshare platform Lyft and nonprofit United Way of Metro Chicago are partnering to provide transportation to older residents in need of food, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced Tuesday.

Lyft will fund roundtrip rides to grocery stores for older residents to “provide immediate support” to neighbors impacted by the Save A Lot grocery store closures, Johnson said at a press conference. The program is funded by a $25,000 contribution from Lyft, Johnson said.

Neighbors can access the program through United Way of Metro Chicago’s 2-1-1 navigators, Johnson said. No app is needed, and residents won’t have to arrange transportation for themselves. Older people just need to dial 2-1-1 using any phone and a navigator will coordinate the ride on their behalf…
