Fish named after ‘Stranger Things’ monsters discovered beneath Alabama military base

While Huntsville may be known for its long history in aerospace innovation and its recent population boom, there are Stranger Things lurking below the surface.

A new species of pale, eyeless cavefish has been discovered in a cave system beneath Redstone Arsenal, a local U.S. Army site with a history of chemical weapons production, according to a study published July 6 in the journal Scientific Reports.

Researchers named the species Demogorgonichthys arcanus, or “demon cavefish,” after the monsters from Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and the underworld demon of Greek mythology…
