OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Weeks after a fatal stabbing in Oshtemo Township, the family of 34-year-old Eric Phillips is searching for answers after learning the man arrested in connection with his death is no longer in custody while the investigation continues.
The case has left Phillips’ loved ones grieving and confused about how a homicide investigation can continue after an arrest is made but before criminal charges are formally authorized.
The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office would not confirm or deny the suspect’s release or discuss the specifics of the active investigation. However, Chief Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Getting agreed to answer questions about Michigan’s legal process in self-defense cases and why suspects are sometimes released while investigators continue gathering evidence.
