Contractor dies after becoming trapped in storm sewer during bout of severe weather

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (WJW) — Two contractors working on a pipe rehabilitation project in a Chicago suburb became trapped in a storm sewer after severe weather swept through the region Monday, July 27.

While one of the workers was rescued hours later, the body of the second worker wasn’t recovered until the next day, according to a post from the Village of Downers Grove.

Police officers were flagged down just before 1 p.m. on July 27 by a Vortex employee who said two crew members were trapped in the storm sewer below the street.

The fire department arrived to the scene and immediately began a technical rescue, the post said…
