The Westside broadly refers to the area south of the Santa Monica Mountains and Sepulveda Pass and west of the 110 Freeway. But of course you’ll find Angelenos who disagree. Across the area, you’ll find more than a handful of Black-owned spots, from coffee shops and a wine bar to a clothing store, hair salon, and Black-Japanese fusion restaurant. For many of these business owners, it’s important to spotlight aspirational Black icons and stories that don’t often take center stage in mainstream culture.
Still, the Westside isn’t typically known for having the same concentration of Black-owned businesses as neighborhoods like Crenshaw or Inglewood, and can be easy to overlook…
