Grey clouds are rolling into parts of Texas on Thursday, July 30. Rain isn’t the only hazard in the forecast, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Cities could see hail amid the storminess.
Storms, hail in Texas Panhandle
Meteorologists at the agency’s Amarillo office say scattered thunderstorms will return to the region this afternoon, expanding the areas they hit as the evening continues. Some that develop, the NWS says, could become strong, bringing quarter-sized hail, 70 mph winds, or a tornado (though the likelihood of a tornado forming is very low).
Dalhart, along with a couple of towns along the Oklahoma border, is at a level 1 out of 5 chance that thunderstorms will turn severe. Meanwhile, the state’s Dumas, Amarillo, and Hereford have a slight risk but are not currently categorized at level one.
Residents should stay extra alert after 3 p.m., as that is when severe storms are most likely to occur, according to the weather radar. They could last intermittently through 1 a.m. on Friday, July 31. Folks are being urged to check that they have weather warning notifications enabled, should any be issued.
