NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — There are currently two nuclear power plants operating in Louisiana. Together they generate 15% of the state’s power, making it the largest source of carbon free power in Louisiana.
The state is taking a step towards expanding the industry. Louisiana was one of only five states selected by the U.S. Department of Energy as potential hosts for nuclear lifecycle innovation campuses. They say the campuses are designed to support activities across the full nuclear fuel lifecycle, from fabrication and enrichment to disposing used fuel.

“We’re an industrial state, so we’re not scared off by having things like refineries, and petrochemical plants,” says Eric Smith, associate director of the Tulane Energy Institute. “Maybe we should be a little bit, but we’re used to it.”
