GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says immigration officials are asking South Carolina authorities not to release an undocumented immigrant charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left a 17-year-old Upstate boy dead.
The request comes after Greenville County officials said Nemecio Aguilar-Hernandez hit and killed Jose Ines Medina Martinez on July 22. Martinez was riding a skateboard along Old Easley Highway when he was hit. Deputies said Aguilar-Hernandez fled the scene.
Officials said Aguilar-Hernandez was arrested and charged with hit-and-run involving death and driving under suspension. He was denied bond on July 26.
DHS officials said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an immigration detainer with Greenville County on July 26.
