While Oklahoma awaits the implementation of a bill signed into law by Gov. Kevin Stitt to protect oil and gas companies from climate change and greenhouse gas lawsuits, just the opposite is developing in Colorado where two cities are asking their state Supreme Court to allow them to continue suing fossil fuel producers for climate change.
The city and county of Boulder filed a brief this week outlining their arguments in Suncor v. Boulder. As E&E News reported, the case is considered to be a “blockbuster” climate case to be taken up this fall by the Supreme Court. The publication suggests the suit could derail nearly two dozen similar lawsuits against the oil and gas industry.
Boulder and the surrounding county want the court to turn aside the oil and gas industry’s request to overturn a 2025 Colorado Supreme Court decision that allowed the lawsuit to proceed in state court.
