HONOLULU (KHON2) — A retired Honolulu Fire Department K-9 who spent years helping investigators is receiving national recognition and lifetime medical support for her service.
Daisy-Kukui, the Honolulu Fire Department’s first accelerant detection K-9, has been inducted into the Project K-9 Hero program as its 400th program member, ensuring she will receive lifetime medical care in retirement.
The 11-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever worked alongside her handler, Michael Carter, for four years.

Daisy-Kukui’s Career
During her career, Daisy responded to approximately 120 fire scenes, using her specialized training to:
- Detect ignitable liquids
- Assist investigators in determining the causes of suspicious fires
In addition to her investigative work, Daisy became a familiar face throughout the community, participating in school demonstrations, public education events and appearances with city leaders.
