Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong recently addressed her affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) during an interview on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.” While affirming her membership in the organization since 2020, Hong sought to clarify her stance on some of its more controversial policy proposals.
Host Dana Perino pressed Hong on past social media endorsements of far-left ideas, including calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), dismantle the U.S. Senate, and defund the police. Hong rejected the notion of abolishing the Senate as “nonsensical and non-practical at this time,” and emphasized her support for maintaining the Supreme Court due to its role in the system of checks and balances.
When asked whether she remains a dues-paying member of the DSA, Hong confirmed her active participation in the Madison chapter and described herself as a “democratic socialist,” as well as a working single mother in the service industry.
Perino challenged Hong on her previous advocacy for police abolition, questioning why voters should trust her current assurances that she would not defund the police if elected. Hong responded by acknowledging that her views have evolved over time and noted that some voters who previously supported former President Trump are now considering her candidacy. She further stated that as governor, she would not pursue defunding the police, citing practical limitations on the office’s authority.
Hong’s affiliation with the DSA has become a focal point in Wisconsin’s gubernatorial race, highlighting tensions within the Democratic Party between its progressive wing and moderates. Despite scrutiny over her earlier statements, Hong has gained significant support from local DSA chapters and prominent Democrats such as Representatives Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna. Recent polling indicates she is the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.
Previously, Hong faced criticism after a 2021 social media post calling for police abolition following the decision not to charge the officer involved in the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha. In a May statement, she clarified that she does not support cutting public safety resources, condemns crime and unsafe streets, and opposes abuse of power by law enforcement.
Regarding her “abolish the Senate” comment from 2021, her campaign said Hong did not recall making the post, which surfaced shortly after the Senate’s acquittal of former President Trump during his impeachment trial.
As the gubernatorial race progresses, Hong’s positions and affiliations continue to draw scrutiny, reflecting broader national debates within the Democratic Party over its future direction.
