Fayette County Schools faces $13M deficit as it weighs new spending, annual dues

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) Fayette County Public Schools is facing a multimillion-dollar budget deficit as school board members prepare to review key spending proposals and annual financial reports at Monday’s planning meeting.

According to agenda documents, Fayette County Public Schools finished fiscal year 2026 with a net operating deficit of $5,126,002.55. The financial crunch is heavily concentrated in the district’s General Fund, where annual expenditures of $713.5 million outpaced $700.5 million in revenue, leading to a single-year operating loss of $13,021,684.63.
