Clear the Shelters returns for 12th year as local animal intake numbers rise

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) -Eight local organizations are participating in Clear the Shelters as part of a nationwide effort to place animals in permanent homes.

Now in its 12th year, the event includes four animal shelters and, for the first time, four rescue groups. Several participating organizations are reducing or waiving adoption fees entirely.

Intake numbers up across the region

Officials say the need for adoptions has grown despite more than a decade of the annual event.
