Having traveled to all 50 states, I’ve developed an appreciation for the unique charm each one holds. Yet, after more than a dozen visits, Florida continues to captivate me with its stunning beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and rich cultural tapestry.
If I had just one full day to spend in Florida, here’s how I would make the most of it.
I’d begin by greeting the sunrise on a beach near Miami. There’s something truly special about watching the early morning light paint the sky in hues of pink and orange along the East Coast. Plus, it’s a peaceful time to enjoy the shoreline before the crowds arrive and temperatures rise.
Next, I’d head about an hour south to Everglades National Park via the Homestead Entrance. As an outdoor enthusiast, I’d spend a few hours hiking the Anhinga Trail, keeping an eye out for alligators and other wildlife. The Pa-hay-okee Overlook offers breathtaking panoramic views that perfectly capture the Everglades’ unique landscape.
After working up an appetite, I’d stop by the Robert Is Here fruit stand, a beloved family-owned spot operating since 1959. This local gem offers exotic fruits, refreshing smoothies, and even a small animal farm and picnic area – an ideal place to relax and savor a treat.
From there, I’d embark on a scenic drive along the Overseas Highway (US Route 1) toward Key West. This 113-mile stretch is renowned for its picturesque ocean views and 42 bridges, including the iconic Seven Mile Bridge. Midway, I’d pause in Islamorada for a seafood lunch at the Hungry Tarpon, enjoying fresh fare with waterfront vistas.
Arriving in Key West, I’d explore the vibrant downtown area along Duval Street, known for its historic bars, eclectic shops, and lively atmosphere. I’d also visit cultural landmarks such as the Hemingway Home and Museum and the Truman Little White House to soak in the island’s rich history.
To conclude the day, I’d experience the famous sunset at Mallory Square, where street performers and vendors gather to celebrate the evening’s finale. Alternatively, a sunset cruise with music, food, and drinks would provide a memorable perspective of Key West’s beauty from the water.
In just one day, Florida’s blend of natural wonders, cultural experiences, and scenic drives offers an unforgettable adventure.
