A father has been sentenced to 16 years in prison following the tragic death of his 7-day-old son, who was fatally attacked by the family dog, Chomp, in Markle, Indiana.
Baby Jason Anthony Weaver was just one week old when the incident occurred on September 4, 2025. Police responded to a call about the infant having difficulty breathing and found the home in deplorable condition. An officer at the scene described a strong odor of animals and trash, with filth scattered throughout the residence.
Emergency responders attempted CPR on Jason, but their efforts were unsuccessful. An autopsy revealed extensive injuries, including over 180 abrasions and bruises, brain hemorrhages, rib fractures, and lung tears.
Following the infant’s death, Jason’s father, Austin Kinsey, along with the mother and four other relatives, were arrested. Kinsey admitted to being in the same room playing video games but leaving the baby unattended briefly when the dog attacked. Initially charged with multiple counts of neglect and harboring a dangerous dog, Kinsey entered a plea deal resulting in the 16-year prison sentence, with the most serious neglect charge dropped.
The mother, Violet Weaver, is expected to enter a plea later this month. Charges against other family members, including grandparents and an uncle, remain active.
Family members described Chomp as usually gentle with Jason, often seen rocking him in a bouncer, but also noted the dog had a history of aggression and jealousy, including previous biting incidents. One relative reportedly even mentioned the possibility of shooting the dog if it caused further problems.
Authorities detailed the unsanitary conditions inside the home, citing infestations of cockroaches and other bugs, including those found in the baby’s car seat, along with piles of trash, dirty dishes, and clothing. The Huntington County Health Department subsequently issued a vacate order, requiring the family to move out shortly after Jason’s death.
After the arrests, Chomp and other dogs from the household were taken to the county animal shelter. Although Chomp showed no signs of aggression or illness while in custody, the dog was euthanized. A necropsy confirmed the dog was healthy and free of medical issues.
The family was ordered to leave the home, which officials deemed uninhabitable due to the severe neglect and unsanitary conditions. This heartbreaking case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by neglect and unsafe living environments.
