Renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, celebrated in the 2021 Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible,” was among ten climbers who tragically lost their lives following an avalanche on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain, located in Pakistan’s Karakoram range.
The avalanche struck on Thursday at the 26,414-foot summit, where Purja had been leading an expedition. Elite Exped, the company organizing the climb, expressed deep sorrow in a statement, mourning the loss of Purja and all those who perished.
“The world has lost one of mountaineering’s greatest climbers,” the statement read. “No words can ease the pain of this unimaginable loss.”
Rescue teams recovered three bodies on Friday, including that of American climber Sarah Mallory Geis. Due to challenging weather and the remote nature of the terrain, operations were temporarily suspended but resumed on Saturday to locate the remaining seven climbers.
Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, reflected on the profound impact of the tragedy. “These courageous climbers, who came from different nations united by their passion for the mountains, represent an immeasurable loss to the global mountaineering community,” he said. He also extended gratitude to the military personnel, Sherpas, and local civilians involved in the ongoing rescue efforts.
The group included climbers from Pakistan, Nepal, China, and the United States. Purja, who held British-Nepali heritage, was a former British Army Gurkha and special forces soldier. His remarkable mountaineering feats, including his attempt to scale all fourteen 8,000-meter peaks in just seven months, earned him international acclaim.
British Defense Minister Wes Streeting paid tribute to Purja, calling him “an inspirational man who served in our Armed Forces for many years – and whose incredible mountaineering adventures are known the world over.”
This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in high-altitude mountaineering, where the beauty of the mountains is matched by the formidable risks faced by those who dare to climb them.
