HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Evansville Police arrested a man who they say was seen on security footage stealing from a vehicle and then setting it on fire near an apartment complex in June.
According to an affidavit, officers were dispatched to a report of a vehicle fire at the intersection of Covert Avenue and Dalehaven Drive just after 2 a.m. on June 21. The fire was extinguished, but the vehicle was damaged beyond repair and part of a nearby apartment complex was damaged due to the heat.
Authorities say security footage at the scene revealed Shamel Hughes, 42, of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and a woman approached the vehicle and opened the door, causing the car alarm to sound off. Police say Hughes was seen rummaging through the vehicle and retrieving unknown items from the vehicle. Police say Hughes bent the license plate off the vehicle and attempted to open the vehicle’s hood.
