AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – With temperatures still on the rise this summer, Xcel Energy is sharing some tips to help you stay cool while also using less energy.
Xcel “Summer Smarts”:
- Cool Early, Stay Cool Later
- It’s more efficient to cool your home when it’s cooler outside.
- Lower your thermostat a few degrees in the morning before peak heat, then raise it slightly during the hottest part of the day to use less energy and stay comfortable.
- Air Conditioner Filters and Coils
- Dirty coils and filters make your AC system work harder to cool your home, which can increase energy use.
- A clean filter improves airflow and can improve indoor air quality, so check monthly and change as needed.
- Large Appliance Use
- Running large appliances such as dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers after the heat of the day helps keep the house cooler and reduces strain on the grid.
- Consider using your oven less often for meal prep.
- Cooler in the Shade
- Keep your home cool by losing drapes and blinds during the hottest hours. Ceiling fans help circulate cool air through the home and can make a room feel up to 8 degrees cooler.
- Rotate fans counterclockwise
