Handicap-accessible fishing pier at Standing Bear Lake closed 18 months for ice damage repairs

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Standing Bear Lake in northwest Omaha is one of the best places to cast a line in the city. Renovations a few years ago included a handicap-accessible pier designed to give kids and wheelchair users easier access to the water.

But the pier has been closed for about 18 months — and a First Alert 6 investigation found out why.

What happened to the pier

Nebraska Game and Parks Aquatic Habitat Manager Jeff Jackson took a closer look at the pier from a kayak and discovered extensive ice damage.

“Some things were bent and pulled off of one of the supports. So when you see that, you understand this is a structural issue we need to get addressed,” Jackson said…
